After a week of serious stock market turmoil, long-term U.S. mortgage interest rates made their biggest one-week drop in four years, according to Freddie Mac Thursday. The average rate on a 30-year fixed rate mortgage plunged to 4.81% with an average 0.4 point, down from 4.94% the week before. One year ago, the average rate was 3.92%. Rates dropped as investors fled to the safety of bonds, fearing a looming market correction.
